Phyllis Jean Holbert, 86, of Columbus, Ohio, departed this life on June 5, 2025, at Indigo of Beavercreek Nursing Home in Beavercreek, Ohio. She was born on April 4, 1939, in Madison, West Virginia, to the late Seybert and Bertie Smoot. She was a graduate of Carver High School and attended West Virginia State University, where she received her associate degree.
Phyllis was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and friend. She married the love of her life, Edward Lee Holbert, and they were married for thirty-two years. They were the proud parents of two sons, Wesley and Brandon, and grandparents to six grandchildren: Kareem, Mariana, Brandon Jr., Aalma, Zion, and Zariah.
Phyllis retired from Sherwin-Williams after twenty years of service in Accounts Payable. In retirement, she generously gave her time to helping others and supporting her church family. She enjoyed spending time with her family and serving as President of the Innis Gardens Village Civic Association. She also loved traveling, dancing, listening to soul music, gardening, and baking her beloved cheesecakes.
Left to cherish her memory are her two sons: Wesley (Lucetta) Holbert of Columbus, Ohio, and Brandon (Samhar) Holbert of Hamilton, Ohio; her sister-in-law, Cornelia Smoot; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and loved ones.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Seybert and Bertie Smoot; her husband of thirty-two years, Edward L. Holbert; her brothers, Rosco, Reginald, and Manifred Smoot; and her sisters, Hattie Smoot and Joetta “Freda” (Louis) Pharr.
Celebration of Life 1PM Monday, June 23, 2025 in the Chapel of SMOOT FUNERAL SERVICES, 4019 E Livingston Ave., Columbus, Ohio. Family will receive friends 12PM until time of service. Interment 11AM Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at Dayton National Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio.
