George Hurt, Sr Obituary

George E. Hurt Sr. was born August 14, 1929, in Fly town Columbus, Ohio to Charles and Ethel Hurt.
Following his graduation from Central High School in 1948, George was drafted into the US Army where he served his Country honorably. George bravely served two years of active duty and five years reserve duty during the Korean War, and received an honorable discharge.


While in the Army, he renewed his relationship with the Lord and his life was saved both physically and spiritually. In 1956, George was baptized at Brentnell Apostolic Church at Donaldson and Washington. He received the Holy Spirit, a moment he described as the greatest experience of his life. George was a longtime member of Greater Ebenezer Cathedral of Praise Church and held several positions including Deacon, Trustee, Treasurer, and Sunday School Superintendent.

In 1952, George married the love of his life, Mary L. Ewing. He loved to travel with his wife and enjoyed sixty-two wonderful years of marriage. Together, they raised six wonderful children.
George was a very hard-working man and was self-employed for fourteen years in partnership with Craig & Son Trucking and Hurt’s Auto and Truck Service. He retired from United Parcel Service (UPS) as an Automotive Manager after twenty-five years. Following his retirement, he worked part-time as a Realtor with Doug Rife and Company Realtors. George would always say, “Let God lead you and you’ll always end up in the right place.” This personal motto was lived daily through his actions. He has never met a stranger and loved to help others and volunteer his time. He would always quote: John 14: “Let not your heart be troubled”. He was an inventor and great mechanic.

George is proceeded in death by his parents Ethel and Charles Hurt, his loving wife (Mary Louise Hurt), his sisters (Martha Henderson, Dora Lee Hurt, Mary Hurt, and Sarah Hurt) and two brothers (John Hurt and Charley Hurt), and his son (Frederick Hurt), daughter in law (Romona Hurt) and grand daughter (Teresa Hurt).
He is survived by his four daughters: Mary L. Hurt (Moore), Lynda L. Hurt (Miller), Loretta K. Hurt (David) Williams, Lisa L Hurt (Wilson), one son: George E. Hurt Jr, A favorite niece (Rozalind Henderson), Other nieces and nephews, grandchildren (13), great grandchildren (26), great-great grandchildren (44), a host of cousins. and other relatives and many, many friends. Deacon George E  Hurt, Sr, 95, was called home to be with the Lord on January 21, 2025. Home-Going Celebration 7PM Friday, January 31, 2025 at Greater Ebenezer Cathedral of Praise 2645 Fairwood Ave. Columbus, Ohio. Family will receive friends 6PM until time of service. Interment 11AM Saturday, February 1, 2025 at Glen Rest Memorial Estates, 8029 E Main St., Reynoldsburg, Ohio.  Arrangements entrusted to SMOOT FUNERAL SERVICES, 4019 E Livingston Ave., Columbus, Ohio, 614-444-1463.
