Douglas C. Moore was born in Thorpe, West Virginia to Ernest C. and Mittie Moore on April 27, 1946. He is a graduate of Gary District High School in Gary, West Virginia, class of 1964 and a graduate from Bluefield State College, Bluefield, West Virginia in 1968 with a B.S. Degree in Education (major Social Studies and minor in English and Psychology). He was a member of OMEGA PSI PHI (Lampodas Club) and a member of the Basketball team from 1964-65. Doug taught school for 2 years and was a member of the AFT (American Federation of Teachers). In 1970 Doug began working for Ohio Laborer’s Training and Upgrading Program, where he was Assistant Director of Training and Administration, a joint Labor- Management project between The Ohio Contractor Association and Laborer’s District Council of Ohio. In
1972 he started working for Laborer’s Local 423 as the Director of Adult Education and a Business Agent. Doug later joined the Adult Basic Education Laborers Local 423 as Director of Education from 1971-1974. During this time, he worked at Woodland Medical Center as Executive Director heading A.N.D (Attention
to Neglected Disease) Sickle Cell Anemia in 1973. As he progressed in his career, he became a Business Agent and Social Service Coordinator for Laborers Local 423 from 1974-1977. He was actively involved in the Mt. Vernon Plaza Youth Association, where he served as a coach from 1980-81, then became heavily
involved with The Mohawk Raiders Football Little League as Director. Doug came to work for the City of Columbus in 1980, as a Code Enforcement officer in the Department of Development. He joined AFSCME (American Federation of State, County, Municipal Employees) Local 1632 in 1980. He started as a Union Steward and later became a Chief Steward, Executive Board member, Vice President and became President in 1992. He was a member of the Franklin County, AFL-
CIO’s Community Service Board, CBTU (Coalition of Black Trade Unionists), and the A. Philip Randolph Institute and formerly served on The Franklin County United Way’s Race Relations Vision Council. Doug was also very active in other community groups and organizations. He was a Regional Vice President for Ohio Council 8 where he was on the scholarship committee. Doug has represented the members of AFSCME Local 1632 for 23 years and has been very instrumental in developing several innovative programs to make the relationship between Labor and Management for the City of Columbus better and less adversarial. These programs include grievance mediation, peer mediations, group legal services, home buyers’ seminars, interest base bargaining, Quality of Working Life (QWL), the Franklin County
Children Services Board, Life Care Alliance of Central Ohio and many others. Doug was a Union Administrator along with former Mayor Coleman who helped implement healthcare for domestic partners which set a precedent nationwide for other cities to model. Doug continued to represent AFSCME Local 1632 as President until January 2015 when he decided to retire from The City of Columbus with 30 years of service. He was deeply rooted in the labor movement and political activism.
The 2022 AFSCME COUNCIL 8 Executive Board announced the 40 th annual AFSCME Ohio Council 8 Family Scholarship (Men’s) was named in honor of Ohio Council 8 leader Doug Moore. Doug was a faithful and devoted member of Travelers’ Rest Missionary Baptist Church, where he was the Chairman of the Trustee Board, Sunday School teacher, a member of the Male Chorus and Mass Choir. He believed that, in order to make the world a better place you need to invest in the lives of
others. He was a jack of all trades, loved to tell jokes and stories. On Sunday, December 25, 2022 at his home, Trustee Douglas C. Moore was called home to glory at the
age of seventy-six years old. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Mittie Moore, and sister Judy Moore Braithwaite.
He leaves to cherish his memory a beautiful devoted wife of 52 years, Sharon; sons Jamal (Nahshon), Jawanza (Bethany) Moore, siblings Clifton (Tona) Moore, Ph.D and Gail Moore Scott; granddaughters, Jihan, Leah and Brianna Moore and grandson Bruce Smith; Uncles Jesse Kellum Sr. and Richard (Jackie) Kellum. Loving and dear nieces Tayana Jones-Patterson, Dr. Melita Moore, Dr. Malika B. Gooden, Dr. Kisha B. Holden, Aisha B. (Kamal) Flucker, Esq., Jamila (David) Phifer and Amber Moore; and nephews Shawn (Tiffany) Jones, Ebon (Annie), Adrian (Danielle) Moore and Ernest Scott. A host of more close great nephews and nieces, and special friends.
Life Celebration 12PM Friday, January 6, 2023 at Travelers Rest Church, 1533 Cleveland Ave, Columbus, Ohio. Trustee Moore will lie in state 10AM; family will receive friends 11AM until time of service. Interment, Glen Rest Memorial Estate, 8029 E Main St., Reynoldsburg, Ohio.
