Carl Smith Obituary

CARL NAPOLEON SMITH was born on June 23, 1966, in Sylacauga, Alabama to the late Carl Tracy and Rosa Pearl (Jones) Smith.  He was one of four children born into this family.  After finding work in Cleveland, OH, the family packed up and made Cleveland their home.  Carl received his education in the Cleveland Public School system.  He graduated from East Technical High School in 1984.  He left Cleveland right out of high school and began college at DeVry University in Columbus, OH.  As life intervened, school was placed on a back burner for a little while.

Carl met and married Jevelyn Josephine Gibson on September 30, 1995.  To this union, one child was born, Avery Rosa Smith.  “Boogs” was his term of endearment for the child he loved to life.

After working for AVI for several years, Carl began working for Medicare/Nationwide/Palmetto in 1996 as a Provider Enrollment Analyst.  He remained a part of Palmetto until his health declined to the point where he resigned on December 31, 2020.

Always working toward fulfilling his goal of a college education and naturally inclined to anything involving electronics, Carl pursued and received a Bachelor degree in Information Systems from DeVry University in 2009.  Inspired by his sister, Carl went on to receive a Master’s degree in the same field in 2011.

Carl, affectionately known as “Po”, was a man who loved life, his family, his church and sports.  He gained a love for smoking meat and tagged this skill as “Po-Licious”.  He was fun loving and enjoyed any conversation regarding sports and good food.

Carl always had a reverence for Christ.  It was in 1996 that he answered the call of the Lord and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized soon after at Union Baptist Church. It was at Union where he served on several ministries including Trustee, Financial Secretary, Usher, Men’s Chorus, VBS Teacher, Van Ministry, IT, Lock-In, and Men on a Mission for Christ.

Carl also served as a council member in the village of Urbancrest for several years and was the president of the Urbancrest Community Improvement Corporation.

After a long and valiant battle with renal failure, the Lord summoned Carl home on February 9, 2021.

Carl leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 25 years, Jevelyn, a loving daughter, Avery Rosa, siblings; Victor T. Smith, Barbette (aka Freda) Smith, and Rodney Smith all of Cleveland, OH; aunts Mildred Washington of Pickerington, OH and Joan Bullock of Urbancrest, OH; in-laws Darryl (Lora) Gibson, Columbus, OH, Alicia Wiggins, Urbancrest OH, and Jessica Lena Gibson, Columbus, OH; nieces and nephews Khara Gibson, Darric Gibson, Aric (Solena) Gibson, Brantley (Sarah) Wiggins, H. Elliot Wiggins, Alexandria Wiggins, Natalie Gibson, Haylee Westerfield, and Vironte “Rick” Nickolson. He also leaves a host of great nieces and nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.
